What does Westminster need?

In short Westminster needs God. It needs the grace of the Triune God of the Bible. It does not ‘need’ this church plant, but our prayer is that the Lord might allow us to play a small part in serving his purposes, for his glory, in Westminster. What might that look like?

1. Worship

Central to Westminster is Parliament. And speaking to a Christian who works in Parliament a fews weeks ago, he reminded us that ‘you need a Whitfield before there is a Wilberforce.’ Absolutely, Christian public servants can seek to go about their work as Christianly as possible for the public good. But real transformation will only come as Westminster aligns itself with the reality of our world, and people turn to worship Jesus as Lord. The foreign policy of heaven can be found in Psalm 2:

And as we worship God when we gather together on a Sunday and in every area of our daily lives, our aim is to call Westminster to join in that worship, to take refuge in the Son, and to live under his rule.

2. Witness

Which leads straight on to being a witness. We want to publicly testify to the ‘wonderful works of God’ centering on the Lord Jesus’s life, death, resurrection and rule (Acts 2:11), which is how people have opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel. And, with the word of God, bear witness against evils which have the potential to drag our nation further into the darkness. For example with the assisted suicide bill raising its head once again: 'Assisted suicide legislation set to return to Westminster'.

3. Wisdom

And that will require being saturated with the wisdom of God, in the pages of Scripture. The Psalms tell us, ‘Blessed is the man… [whose] delights in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.’ Our aim is to teach, harken to, and obey the whole counsel of God so that we can enjoy knowing God and his wisdom in every area of life. This will both instruct our whole life worship of him, and we pray, will be a witness to the watching world, as has always been the aim of God’s people:

• The Lord would continue to gather just the right people for the launch team

• That we would be a church that faithfully worships, witnesses and lives out the wisdom of God

• That the trustees and others helping us, would be wise in setting up various aspects of the church

• That as we launch a wider public presence on social media this month, the Lord might use that to connect with people whom we might partner with, and reach others with the gospel

• That the Lord would provide all we need practically and financially

‘Was the tomb empty?’

Despite perhaps being somewhat overhyped amongst the general population, the resurrected interest in Christianity in some intellectual spheres, and amongst younger people online has been a great source of encouragement. From Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Niall Ferguson professing faith, to Richard Dawkins expressing appreciation and a preference for cultural Christianity, and even the host of the world’s biggest podcast going to church and observing Christianity ‘works’, right now there seems to be a window of opportunity for the proclamation of the gospel in the public square.

Yet proclaiming the lordship of Jesus matters not only because it produces individual or cultural benefits, although it certainly does. It matters because it is true. And if it not true, if Jesus did not die for the sins of the world, if he did not really physically rise from the dead, if he did not ascend to the right hand of his Father in heaven to rule the world, and if he will not return to judge the living and the dead ushering in his perfected new world, it is simply a grand charade, and those who follow him are deluded and pitiable. As the Apostle Paul saw clearly:

"...if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain... And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins...If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.” 1 Corinthians 15:14-19

Because the tomb really was empty, and Jesus really is reigning as the Lord of all, our vision at Trinity Church Westminster is to maximally proclaim him and maximally worship him as we gather and in every area of life, for his glory. We want to use this window of opportunity to show those who work in or who can commute into Westminster, that Jesus isn’t just ‘useful’, but is the concrete and certain hope of the world. Below, Kevin DeYoung and Carl Trueman articulate helpfully that we are not seeking to simply speak about the cultural benefits of the Christian faith but to seize the opportunity and press home the truths of the gospel:

Our next praying and planning meeting is on Sunday 24th May 15:45-17:00 at our venue in Church Hall on Castle Lane in Westminster. • We would connect with more people who could serve as part of the planting team, and that a number considering joining would make the decision to commit to the launch team - including gifted musicians.

• Give thanks for partnerships already made in workplace ministries nearby, and pray for meetings in the coming weeks to establish others.

• For our online presence, and that over the coming months we would be known as a place where those seeking can come to hear the claims of Jesus.

• That we would be a church marked by dependent and diligent prayer. And for our prayer and planning meeting on the 24th May.

• For practical and financial provision as we continue to establish the various necessary practical matters required, and as we apply for grants to sustain us financially in the initial stages of the plant.

We believe there is a huge opportunity at this moment in history, using the best of church history, as we seek to proclaim the Lord Jesus.

Each one of us needs to deal with the objective moral failings of our own soul, and we need the forgiveness and love of God (see interview with Ben Sasse in bonus section below). At the same time, there seems to be a ‘way in’ with a coming generation who are struggling with their identity, or more precisely their lack of identity, who see the attraction of the deep rootedness arising from connection to the church throughout history. And as the Lord Jesus is the Lord of history, his gospel is not simply a philosophical idea, but a historical reality being worked out in history, what they will find with the Lord Jesus and his people is the true identity, history, reality, relationship, body - all of which they were made to inhabit. In bowing the knee to Jesus as Lord we do not have the tyranny of having to create our own identity, but the liberation to receive the one we were made for.

Therefore, one of our aspirations at Trinity Church Westminster, in a similar way to what Gavin Ortlund’s articulates below, is to lean into some history and liturgy from our own evangelical tradition, both to encourage those of us who already know the Lord Jesus and to actively embody this historical rootedness to those who are searching for something more. In practice this will not look hugely different to the shape of many evangelical church gatherings, but will include a few more of the liturgical elements that have dropped out of popular church practice in recent times. These elements included the singing of psalms, biblical based set prayers and scripture responses. (Please find an example service sheet here).

A huge opportunity: geographically

Given our aim to reach and serve Londoners - particularly those who work in West Central London and those who can easily commute into there, there can scarcely be a better place to gather than our Church Hall venue on Castle Lane in Westminster. It is within around a 10 minute walk from the tube stations pictured above, at the crossroads of the working centres in Westminster (which is populated by 1 million people on a working day). These factors make it an easy place to come for a Bible study or event after work on a Wednesday evening, and an easy place to get to on a Sunday.

Furthermore, with people coming to London from all over the UK and all over the world, and many then going back to places all over the UK and all over the world, our prayer is that, under God, he might use this church over time to play a small part in reaching people across the country and the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Bonus: A huge opportunity not to be wasted

Ecclesiastes tells us that although we are commanded to enjoy the good gifts of God in life: “Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do” (9:7), if we are seeking to live wisely, we will pay close attention to reality of death: “It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart” (7:2). This thoughtful testimony from Ben Sasse below, who is likely facing death this year, is a word of wisdom to those following Jesus, and a word of hope to those who do not yet know him.

An exciting time to plant a church!

We have been greatly encouraged by the book of Kings recently. One of the things it tells us is that even while living in a nation with a compromised national church, it is an exciting time to be part of local gathering that takes God at his word. For when churches fail to be reformed by the word of God, they will be re-formed by the word of God. As by his Spirit through his word the Lord continues his unstoppable purpose to see the nations discipled and his glory fill the earth.

The Church of England, as well as other mainline denominations, are failing to guard the gospel (See a great interview from our Spiritual Overseer Vaughan Roberts at GAFCON 2026 in Abuja here). Yet, there seems to be a growing interest from people to hear about real, robust, biblical Christian faith. We believe it is an exciting time to be planting a church in Westminster, to gather a group of believers who want to go out and proclaim the gospel in all areas of life, and see how the Lord uses his church in the next generation.

This recent sermon includes some of the biblical reasoning behind our decision to begin outside the current Church of England structures. Although we want to be a Reformed Evangelical Anglican Church, we think as we are starting something new, given the mess in the Church of England, we will be best served beginning outside the official structures. We will get on with seeking to build the church, while remaining closely connected to, supported by, and overseen by fellow evangelicals, leaving the option to rejoin should a sufficient settlement come to pass. Giving thanks

We have had a few super information sessions so far this month, as we have sought to explain the vision, spread the word and ask people to consider being founding partners at Trinity Church Westminster.

But we would love to spread the word further, and invite anyone to consider joining us, who would be excited to join a church looking to maximally apply the Bible to every area of life, meeting in Westminster. If you are in London please join us for our supporters briefing on Sunday 1^st March 15:45-17:00 at St Michael’s Cornhill Rectory (access via the garden around the back of the church building down St Michael’s Alley). This is for anyone who might be interested in joining us or simply for those wishing to find out more and support the plant.
